Pterygium Surgery

Pterygium Surgery

Pterygium is a triangular growth of fleshy tissue on the conjunctiva. It can remain small or grow large enough to cover part of the cornea. When this happens, it can affect vision. It requires surgery to remove it. Once the pterygium is removed, a thin piece of normal conjunctival tissue (CAG) is grafted onto the bare sclera with fibrin glue or suture. This technique helps to reduce the chance of recurrence of pterygium. The best way to keep pterygium from coming back is to avoid sunlight, wind and dust.
